New dockling: Pingling

Pingling screenshot

Pingling is a dockling that tells you on a second by second basis whether or not you currently have a working internet connection. That's it. Download it here.

I wrote this because my internet service has been up and down for the last couple of weeks. It's really handy to know before you start trying to do something whether or not it's going to work. It's also good for getting your iBook lined up just so to access a weak wi-fi signal.

Also, it's 2005 and I've written a brand new dockling. I am punk rock.

Not working on my 1.2ghz iBook G4 running 10.3.9 with either the built-in ethernet or airport. Tried restarting but still displaying "error". Ping works fine from the terminal.

Looks like a cool dockling.

Can you paste in the results of a ping, particularly the summary at the end? Pingling currently works by parsing the output of the actual ping, which isn't a very robust thing to do, and may be causing your problem.

i use it at home on my imac cos of dodgy net connection

i would love to see the option to have it record in a log file how many times the net connection goes offline and an option to set how often it pings (sometimes it reports dead when it's not for a second or 2)

It works just like you said, and it is quite handy cuz my wireless router seems to crap out from time to time, and i'm not sure what's wrong until i've opened firefox only to see all my tabs aren't loading. I really like the quality of what you've done here. Would you consider making a docklet that shows upload/download speed? That would be handy so i could see how fast my downloads (bittorrent/limewire, etc) are downloading web I surf the web.
